What is a Giclée Print
Giclée prints are a blend of fine art and modern technology. They are
works printed on the highest quality archival paper and water-based in an even
spread, where off-set lithographs rely on a dot pattern. Giclées have
a continual color saturation that produces a detailed reproduction with all
the brilliance of the original artwork.
How are they made?
The first step in producing a giclée
is to take a digital photo or make a high resolution color
scan of the artwork.
The resulting digital image may be adjusted several times for
accuracy; with each adjustment there is a proof produced to
compare to the original work. I approve the final proof.
The printing process begins with a high-end Giclée
printer. A set of four nozzles move across a high grade archival
paper, each nozzle containing a different color watercolor
ink: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These inks are the same
colors used in high-end color printing and are combined to
reproduce all colors to the naked eye. Each nozzle sprays a
fine mist of ink onto the paper, much like an airbrush. The
visual resolution is 1800 drops per inch, giving the Giclée
print the smooth color transitions similar to the original.
The process mimics the original so well that Giclée
prints are often mistaken for the original.
The printing process takes between 45 to 60 minutes to complete
a single Giclée. I then inspect them and sign and number
the approved prints in a predetermined edition size.
